The grant supports the design and implementation of a program promoting free spaces and public parks, while simultaneously educating children about their significance. The grant also places emphasis on reaching underprivileged urban areas and children who face financial difficulties and rarely have opportunities to interact with nature, while five open events at the end of the program will engage an even wider population of people residing in the selected underprivileged areas. The educational material produced will then become available online, for teachers to use independently, with the guidance of the organization’s educators. The Hellenic Ornithological Society was founded in 1982 and is the only Greek not-for-profit organization exclusively concerned with the protection of wild birds and their habitats. The organization’s objectives include studying and protecting birds and their habitats in Greece—one of the last remaining natural wildlife sanctuaries in Europe—, promoting the organization’s goals to the European Union in partnership with related European ornithological societies, and informing and educating the public in all matters concerning the birds of Greece. The Hellenic Ornithological Society is a partner of BirdLife International, the largest world organization concerned with the protection of birds and their habitats.
