The Courtauld shapes a generation of art scholars with support from SNF

Since 1999, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Scholarship Program at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London has supported talented students in accessing internationally renowned advanced degrees in art history, curation, and conservation. The program has supported well over a hundred scholars, many of whom have gone on to be active in key roles in the art world around the globe. Hear from a few of them about their experience:

"At The Courtauld, I met pioneer researchers, innovative and inspirational scholars, who motivated me to learn, and guided me toward skill development. Studying at The Courtauld made me reconsider and re-evaluate scientific process in a fundamental way. I learned a research methodology which enabled me to gain a complete understanding of new concepts beyond religious art. Since then, I have been exploring post-Byzantine art, mainly icon painting, and engaging in research projects on religious art, in Greece. My Stavros Niarchos Foundation scholarship made it all possible and liberated me from the finance burden, helping me focus on my studies with utmost commitment. It actually changed my life!"

Panorea Benatou, Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books, and Head of the Benaki Museum Library, Athens, Greece

"Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s generous scholarship changed my life and made me what I am today: an art historian, currently a Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary art at the University of Bristol. Their support allowed me to immerse myself in The Courtauld‘s community without financial worries. It also enabled me to embark on a journey into Art History, on which I am still travelling. I returned to India after the MA and become an editor with ART India, the country’s premier art journal. I returned to The Courtauld and embarked on my PhD with Professor Julian Stallabrass. My thesis on Indian art and nationalism was a fusion of my time in India and the concerns I had explored during my MA."

Dr. Zehra Jumabhoy, Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary art, History of Art department, University of Bristol, UK
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholar 2005/06, MA 2006, PhD 2017

"Undertaking my PhD at The Courtauld was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. As an international student from Singapore, my Stavros Niarchos Foundation scholarship in the initial years of my PhD made a significant difference to my financial wellbeing and allowed me to concentrate on my research and fieldwork plans in China, which also helped me build the necessary intellectual and collegial networks for the future."

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholar 2004/05, MA 2005, PhD 2009

"Stavros Niarchos Foundation provided crucial support at a formative stage in my career. I will always be grateful for the help it provided, and for the generosity towards the arts that such funding represents."
