Mali faces one of the highest child and infant mortality rates in the world, but a number of efforts are underway there to improve health outcomes for young people.
On Friday, February 14, the Centre Hospitalier Mère-Enfant le Luxembourg in Bamako, Mali’s capital, opened a new specialized lab dedicated to addressing cardiac issues.
The new catheterization lab will support the hospital’s medical staff in conducting lifesaving examinations and surgeries.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) provided support for the project through a grant to SHARE Monaco, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving access to quality cardiovascular care in Sub-Saharan Africa. SHARE offers cardiovascular education and training and works to establish self-sufficient cardiovascular care units. SNF’s grant for the project was a natural extension of the Foundation’s repeated support for Monaco Collectif Humanitaire, an initiative to welcome children to Monaco for medical treatments not available in their home countries.
