Greece’s oldest educational institution gets brand new facilities

Oct 02, 2023

Founded in 1836, the Society for the Promotion of Education & Learning - Arsakeia/Tositseia Schools (Philekpaideftiki Etaireía) is the oldest educational organization operating in Greece. Its history traces some of the most important milestones in Greece’s modern past.

A Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) grant supported the construction of a more-than-2,000-square-meter building, officially inaugurated on September 29, as part of the wider Arsakeia Schools of Ioannina complex. The grant also covered landscaping for the areas around the building, as well as the creation of a 5 versus 5 soccer pitch and a parking area.

The new Stavros Niarchos Foundation Building, which serves high school students, was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the Hellenic Parliament and a host of guests, students, and parents.

Lina Giotaki, SNF’s Chief Legal Counsel, represented the Foundation at the event, remarking, “Our collaboration with the Philekpaideftiki Etaireía for the construction of the building that now houses Arsakeio Ioannina, as well as the landscaping of the surrounding areas at the school, began about five years ago. During this time, we had the pleasure of working with people who had a clear vision, but also the willingness and the dedication necessary to overcome obstacles caused―among other things―by the pandemic, bringing the project to completion about a year ago. Tonight’s inauguration ceremony finds Arsakeio High School of Ioannina in full operation, in a facility worthy of its history and its future goals.”
