The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) turns one!

Jun 08, 2022
The New York Public Library’s (NYPL) Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) recently celebrated one year since its official opening—one year of offering a beautiful, inspiring public space that invites all New Yorkers to explore, learn, and grow—with a birthday party at the SNFL Children’s Center.

Kids celebrated with games, story time, a special guest appearance of NYPL’s lion mascot (inspired by the icon Patience and Fortitude statues across the street from SNFL), and more. The setting highlighted the warm, purpose-built spaces designed to welcome New Yorkers of all ages around which SNFL is designed.

SNFL’s first year has been packed with public programming of all stripes, from a discussion with SNF Agora Institute Senior Fellow Yascha Mounk on Making Diverse Democracies Endure, to a conversation with SNFL architects Francine Houben and Elizabeth Leber on how they transformed an uninspiring building into a library people love, and far beyond.

SNFL is NYPL’s reimagined and remade central circulating branch, transformed through a major grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) as part of its focus on helping create vibrant and inclusive public spaces.
