SNF honored as it celebrates New York Immigration Coalition’s work safeguarding rights
This week, Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) representatives attended an event celebrating the work of the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC), an umbrella organization which, along with its members, helps safeguard the rights of immigrants in New York City.
SNF’s support for NYIC began in response to the acute situation faced by new arrivals in New York at the height of the pandemic and has continued since. We were deeply honored and humbled that SNF was recognized as the Visionary Honoree at the event, where SNF Co-Chief Programs Officer Casey Russo and Program Officer Luis Daniel Caridad spoke on behalf of the Foundation.
“Throughout our 26 years of grantmaking, we have sought to help respond to moments of crises in our community here in New York, in Greece, and around the world,” said Casey. “We are immensely grateful for partners like the New York Immigration Coalition, which has stood steadfast with its members on the front lines of this work for over 30 years. When crisis strikes, we know we can count on you to be there with an ear to the ground, listening to the needs of the community and helping meet them.”
“When asylum-seekers began arriving in the city last spring and the Coalition reached out, all we had to do at SNF was listen. Listen and trust that the Coalition and you, its members, not only knew how to respond, but that you were already responding, with whatever limited staff and resources you had available,” said Luis. “Your work has helped ensure that NYC is not only a city run by immigrants, but also a city that welcomes them. That’s what we’re celebrating here tonight, and why we can’t thank you enough.”
