Congratulations to Rockefeller University and Nobel Laureate Charles M. Rice

This week, Rockefeller University virologist Charles M. Rice was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, alongside Harvey J. Alter and Michael Houghton, for his work contributing to a cure for hepatitis C. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) congratulates Professor Rice and The Rockefeller University on this momentous recognition.

Rice is the 26th scientist associated with The Rockefeller University, a longstanding SNF partner, to be honored with the Nobel Prize. If it were its own country, the University would rank in the top ten nations by Nobel Prizes won.

A fundamental component of the University’s approach to groundbreaking scientific research is collaboration between researchers across lab boundaries. SNF is proud to have helped facilitate this with a major grant to the University to help create the state-of-the-art new Stavros Niarchos Foundation – David Rockefeller River Campus, which was dedicated last spring.

Most recently, as part of its $100 million global pandemic relief initiative, SNF made a significant grant to help bolster the urgent research related to COVID-19 and the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes it underway in numerous Rockefeller labs. Advancing that research has led scientists to create a harmless stunt double for the virus and to study llama antibodies.
