A talk on the Theatre of Nikopolis, an ancient monument on the come up
Mar 05, 2025

The ancient Theatre of Nicopolis, which dominates the monuments of the suburb of Nicopolis, the city founded in modern-day Greece by Octavian after his victory at the Battle of Actium, was the focus of a recent lecture in a series of talks entitled "The Surprises," organized by the Athens Concert Hall in collaboration with the DIAZOMA Association.
At the event, Dr. Anthi Angeli, head of the Preveza Ephorate of Antiquities, and archaeologist Evangelos Pavlidis from the same agency discussed the excavation of this significant Roman monument and efforts to make its significance more widely known. The discussion was introduced and moderated by the President of the Association, Stavros Benos, and George Agouridis, Member and Legal Advisor of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Board of Directors, gave remarks.
SNF supported a restoration study for the ancient Roman Theatre of Nicopolis, one of the most important of the period, through a past grant. This followed a grant for a restoration study on the Ancient Theatre of Sparta, paving the way for its preservation and the revival of its former role as a meeting place and venue for cultural events, as well as a grant for the development of a digital tour application on ancient Greek theatres.
